Troutbeck's Traditional Inns and Posh Restaurants

About Fellside Studios

An unbeatable choice of places to eat, from famous traditional inns to a Michelin-starred restaurant

The Lake District is justifiably famous for its great choice of eating places –  but you don't have to leave the Troutbeck Valley to experience the very best that the Lakes has to offer.

Just a few minutes' walk from Fellside Studios through Troutbeck Village there are two famous Lakeland inns, The Queens Head and The Mortal Man, both offering real log fires and a choice of a hearty Cumbrian meal or a foaming pint of real ale.

Or for something a bit more special, about a mile down the Troutbeck Valley from us we've got two wonderful country-house restaurants at Holbeck Ghyll and Broadoaks. Both are truly splendid and a bit posh. (They are both listed in the Michelin Guide, and Holbeck Ghyll even boasts a covetted Michelin star.)

Traditional Inns in Troutbeck

The Queen's Head
Just a few minutes walk from Fellside Studio's front door, the Queen's Head is still our favourite Lake District traditional inn. The main room, with its massive carved-oak bar and two log fires, is the best place to eat or drink, but at weekends in summer you'll need to get there before 7.00pm to get a table. Luckily, there are also two quieter (but a bit less atmospheric) side-rooms serving the same good traditional Cumbrian fare.
• About 10 to 15 minutes walk, through Troutbeck village then turn sharp right back onto the A592.
• Food served all day, every day from 12.00pm to 9.00pm, bar open from 11.00am to 11.00pm.
• Tel: 015394 32174.

The Mortal Man
An even shorter walk from Fellside's front door is the Mortal Man. It's generally quieter than its rival, with a good choice of ales, bar meals, a traditional tap-room with open fires, and a lovely restaurant dining room with stunning views looking straight down the Troutbeck valley towards Lake Windermere. In summer there can't be a better place to enjoy a pint after your walk than the Mortal's beautiful lawned garden.
• About 10 minutes walk through Troutbeck village.
• Open every day, 11am to 11pm, with bar food served from 12pm - 3pm and 6.30pm - 9pm; restaurant open from 6.30pm - 9.30pm.
• Tel: 015394 33193.

Country House Restaurants in Troutbeck

Holbeck Ghyll Country House Restaurant
This is one of the very best Lakeland country-house restaurants, with a well-earned Michelin star and a perfect location. The oak-panelled dining rooms and lounges have many original Arts and Crafts features, stunning elevated views across Windermere, and excellent food and service. Lunch is less pricey and you can stroll in the gardens all afternoon, but in the evenings there's a real sense of occasion (perfect for very important 60th birthday celebrations!)
• Holbeck Lane, three minutes drive down the hill from Fellside Studios.
• Open every day, 12.30pm - 2pm, 7pm - 9.30pm.
Tel: 015394 32375.
• Web: www.holbeckghyll.com

Broadoaks Country House Restaurant
Another beautiful Arts and Crafts country-house, with magnificent oak panelling and William Morris plasterwork, perfectly situated in seven acres of lawned gardens overlooking the lower Trout Beck. Intimate and relaxed dining; excellent food, warm and friendly service.
• Two minutes drive down the hill from Fellside Studios on Bridge Lane.
• Open every day for lunch and dinner.
• Tel: 015394 32375.

O mortal man that lives by bread
what is it makes they nose so red?

– Thou silly fool, that look'st so pale
'Tis drinking Sally Birketts ale.
